Review

Breaking Benjamin are nothing if not consistent. Phobia finds them picking up exactly where they left off with 2004's We Are Not Alone, mixing heavy hard rock dynamics with a moody demeanor that never slips into full-on dejection, thanks in part to their proficient grasp of the accessible melody and ever-rousing chorus. Darkness permeates Phobia's tracks (bookended by a useless intro and outro), but the quartet always remembers the silver lining hanging in its oft-cloudy skies. Songs like "Until the End" exhibit this resilient attitude, affirming that while life can be tough, "Why give up? Why give in?…So I will go on until the end." Breaking Benjamin mix urgent up-front vocals with dense underside riffing ("The Diary of Jane," "Topless"), while still being able to effortlessly pull off songs with vulnerable edges ("Here We Are," "Breath"). This is heard even more in the gentle acoustic version of "The Diary of Jane" not listed on the back cover; it sounds natural and not just like a strained bonus novelty -- featuring Dropping Daylight's Sebastian Davin, the version may even be better than the original. As is often the case, certain tracks work out much better than others, as in the tough angst of "Dance with the Devil" versus the forced warbling of "Unknown Soldier." The main problem with the guys has always been that while everything is pulled off capably, there isn't always much to distinguish them from the rest of the post-grunge/alt-metal pack or really, each of their songs from one another. But what Breaking Benjamin lack in distinctiveness, they make up in a certain charm that makes them 100 times more appealing than most of their testosterone-clogged peers. Phobia will not win over any skeptics still holding out on the band, but for those already happily settled in the Benjamin camp, it makes for another satisfying listen. ~ Corey Apar, All Music Guide

Phobia is the third studio album by post-grunge quartet Breaking Benjamin. It was recorded at The Barbershop Studios in Hopatcong, New Jersey. It was released on August 8, 2006 and quickly sold out at major retail chains such as Best Buy and Target. The album sold 131,000 copies in its first week, which made it the fastest selling and highest charting Breaking Benjamin album to date, hitting #2 on the US Billboard Top 200. The intro track features the sound effects of an airport, playing upon Benjamin Burnley's fear of flying. This also concurs with the album name, Phobia.

The album reentered the Billboard 100 at number 38 on May 5, 2007 with its reissue. On May 21, 2009, the album was certified platinum by the RIAA.[1]

  • "The Diary of Jane" was the first single from Phobia. "The Diary of Jane" was the fastest added song ever in Hollywood Records' history, and was even featured in the video game NASCAR 07.
  • "You" was played live for the first time during an all acoustic set at "Concert for a Cause IV" in April of 2006, while the band was still in the recording process. In an interview, Burnley revealed that he had mistakenly forgotten the second verse of the song during the set.
  • "Topless" is an old fan favorite, written and performed before the band had even released their debut album Saturate.
  • There is a spelling mistake in the lyrics book on the song "Dance With The Devil", where it says 'So many days go bye'.
  • "The Diary of Jane", and "Breath" were covered by a classical cover quartet called "The Vitamin String Quartet", and is on the album "Strung Out- The String Quartet Tribute to Hard Rock Hits, Vol.4.
  • "The Diary of Jane" was also featured in a short scene in the 2008 movie Step Up 2: The Streets.
  • According to lead singer Ben Burnley on the Phobia DVD, the track Evil Angel was one of the first songs they wrote for Phobia.
  • A cover version of "The Diary of Jane" is featured in the music video game Rock Revolution, and the master is available for download for Rock Band.
