1. In Greek myth, son of Amyntor, a king in Thessaly. His mother persuaded him to seduce his father's concubine, out of jealousy. When his father found out he cursed him with childlessness; Phoenix left home and went to Phthia, where he was kindly received by Peleus and put in charge of the young Achilles (Peleus' son). In the Trojan War he was one of the ambassadors sent to bring Agamemnon's offer of reconciliation to Achilles, whom he had accompanied to Troy.
2. The eponymous ancestor of the Phoenicians, son of Agenor, king of Tyre, and brother of Cadmus and Europa.
