any organism whose principal or only source of primary energy is sunlight. The great majority of such organisms are photoautotrophs (or photolithotrophs), which use light energy to synthesize their organic requirements solely from inorganic precursors; these include all green plants and algae, cyanobacteria, and green and purple sulfur bacteria. Relatively few phototrophs are photoheterotrophs (or photoorganotrophs), which require a supply of organic precursors to manufacture their own organic components; examples include certain purple nonsulfur bacteria.
