any artificial conjugate of a phycobiliprotein with a molecule conferring biological specificity (e.g., avidin, immunoglobulin, protein A). Such conjugates are useful in fluorescence immunoassay and fluorescence-activated cell sorting, by virtue of the distinctive and intense fluorescence of the phycobiliprotein moiety.
