Energy cost of physical activity expressed as a ratio of basal metabolic rate.


PAR

The energy used for a particular activity calculated by multiplying the basal metabolic rate (BMR) by a factor appropriate to that activity; PAR energy cost of an activity per minute/energy cost of BMR per minute. Thus, the energy cost of sitting at rest is 1.2; for walking at a normal pace, 4; and for jogging, 7.
