Applied to theories, particularly of cognitive development, proposed by the psychologist Jean Piaget (1896-1980). Although he did not deny the effects of environment in cognitive development of the child, he emphasized the role of innate mechanisms. He suggested that development took place in a series of stages with each stage being the foundation of the next.
