Review

The promotional split EP from Big Wheel and Doghouse Records features two of the labels' bigger artists, and it contains a fair share of catchy music as well. River City High open up the disc with three of their songs, and while there is nothing wrong with their upbeat melodic emo pop, there is also nothing particularly entrancing about it either. On the whole it sounds a bit like Weston played with less humor and more laughable lovelorn honesty. Piebald takes the same approach, but they have that something extra that actually makes their contributions surprisingly worthwhile. "American Hearts" from the group's Rock Revolution EP leads off the pack with a memorable chorus and plenty of positive spirit. The disc also contains demos for two tracks for the group's LP Piebald Feeds the Horse. "Look, I Just Don't Like You" is a bit lacking in it's stripped-down presentation, but it still rocks just as much as the band's other efforts. The supremely catchy "The Monkey Versus the Robot" rounds out the batch, and it's chorus of "We got the best job ever/Yeah we really got lucky/We're nobody's robot/We're nobody's monkey" is a triumphant paean to the rock & roll life. Piebald never takes themselves too seriously, but these songs prove that as they move ahead they are able to maintain their sense of humor while still musically upping the ante on their hard-rocking pop material. ~ Peter J.
