Cordier, Pierre (b. 1933), Belgian experimental photographer who studied briefly with Otto Steinert in 1958. Two years earlier, however, Cordier had invented the chemigram, a technique of abstract image making in which the texture of the photographic emulsion is affected by various substances, rendering light simply another ingredient in the process, rather than the determining factor. The technique combines the physicality of painting with the chemistry of photography, calling into question the chemigram's status as a photograph. It has become a widely used method of experimental photography.
