Pietro Aaron

Music Encyclopedia: Pietro Aaron

(b Florence, c1480; d ?Bergamo, c1550). Italian music theorist and composer. He was cantor at Imola Cathedral from c1515 to 1522, when he went to Venice. In 1536 he entered a monastery in Bergamo. In his valuable treatises, his ideas on modes, counterpoint, temperaments etc are always practical and often extend traditional ones: Toscanello (1523) is important for its clear, progressive discussions of musical practice. His correspondence with other musicians is also informative.
