US modern dance company founded in 1971 by Moses Pendleton and Jonathan Wolken, fellow students at Dartmouth College. The company took its name from a phototropic fungus found in New England. Later members included Lee Harris, Michael Tracy, Robby Barnett, Martha Clarke, and Alison Chase. It operates as a kind of dance collective in which the dancers are jointly responsible for the company's productions. Their form of sculptural dance theatre combines acrobatics, gymnastics, pantomime, and modern dance with striking visual effects and distinctive optical illusions. In 1977 the company, which is based in Washington, Connecticut, enjoyed a successful Broadway run. Artistic directors in 1997 included Barnett, Chase, Tracy, and Wolken.
Pilobolus, which is based in Washington Depot, Conn., and tours throughout the United States and abroad, began using outside collaborators in 1999 and outside choreographers in 2007. In 2006, after artistic differences arose among its artistic directors and its management, Alison Chase left the company. Since 1991 Pilobolus has maintained an educational arm, the Pilobolus Institute, devoted to teaching its process and technique.
