Piloo Mody was the founder of the Swatantra Party and an advocate of liberal and free politics of India. He was a member of the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament. A member of the Parsee community, he was married to a Swiss national. An architecture school and a FIDE chess tournament are named in his honour.
Mody was educated at The Doon School, Dehradun and at the University of California, Berkeley, and was close to Zulfikar Ali Bhutto[citation needed], the former Pakistani prime minister, his school and college roommate. Piloo Mody was a great friend of Zulifikar Ali Bhutto and wrote the book Zulfy my Friend ".
He was an architect by education.[1]. His brother, Russi Mody is a former chairman of Tata Iron and Steel company Limited. Piloo was arrested by Indira Gandhi government under MISA in Emergency in India in 1975 [1]
