Pine Island is a hamlet in the town of Warwick in Orange County, New York, United States. It is the largest community in the Black Dirt Region, which is famous for the "black dirt onions." Pine Island is also home to the annual Onion Festival, celebrating the fact that nearly 30% of all the onions grown in the United States are grown there.[1] It has the ZIP Code 10969.

It gets its name from being slightly elevated over the surrounding land. In the days before the nearby Wallkill River was rerouted to control flooding, it would often be an actual island for a period in the spring. It is known for its onion production, as the soil is particularly fertile.

The Pine Island Fire District is centered here with the main station located on County Route 1, and a sub-station in the Hamlet of Amity, and the Amity Fire Station.

The Pine Island Fire District constructed a new firehouse which combined the Pulaski and Amity fire companies into one, central station. The new Station 1 is directly across from the old Station 1 on County Route 1 and was completed in the late winter of 2010.

After 84 years, Pine Island Elementary was voted in the district budget cut to be closed to save $1.5 million. Current students will be shuffled to neighboring elementary schools in the district. The situation has led to a negative response amongst natives and parents of the students because the historic landmark will no longer be used by the children of the community.
