Pine Technical College, is located 60 miles (97 km) north of the Twin Cities in Pine City, Minnesota. PTC was established in 1965 and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The college serves more than 1,200 students and awards certificates, diplomas and associate degrees. PTC’s notable programs include accounting, American Sign Language, automotive technology, business administration, business technology, computer programming, computer science, early childhood development, gunsmithing technology, network administration, practical nursing, precision manufacturing/machining (CNC), public welfare financial worker, and many more. PTC is a proud member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, which comprises 32 state universities and community and technical colleges serving the higher education needs of Minnesota. The system serves about 277,000 students per year in credit-based courses and an additional 157,000 students in noncredit courses.

History of Pine Technical College

Established in 1965 as the 24th Minnesota area vocational-technical school with a focus on providing occupational, educational and technical expertise to students, the local Pine City School Board of Education worked closely with the Minnesota Department of Education from 1963 to 1965 to obtain necessary approvals needed to establish an area vocational-technical school in Pine City. During this period, Pine City and Mora were cities both considered as sites. The Department originally chose Mora as the site for the vocational-technical school; however, after a visit to the Pine City public schools by the Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Education, Pine City was designated as the site for the new area vocational-technical school.

Originally housed in various locations throughout Pine City, the college's main 22,500-square-foot (2,090 m²) building was not built until 1966. The first programs offered at Pine City Area Vocational-Technical School in 1966 were in four program areas that offered occupational diplomas in auto mechanics, welding, drafting and secretarial/business. Students did not pay tuition to attend the vocational-technical school.

In 1989, the college opened the Employment and Training Center, which manages a variety of childcare, training and support programs for the five counties serving East Central Minnesota. In 1994, the college sought and received accreditation through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and in 1996, the college was established as a state technical college. Today, Pine Technical College retains its NCACS accreditation, is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, serves more than 1,000 students and offers programs/degrees in a variety of career fields.

• Named President of Pine Technical College in July, 1998
• Founded the Johnson Center for Simulation, an advanced technology research and development lab which creates virtual reality simulations and serious games for industrial training

• Chaired the Pine City Fiber Optic Backbone Joint Powers Board, a board responsible for the installation of a fiber optic telecommunications backbone from Pine Technical College through the commercial and industrial districts in the community
• Founded the Pine Area Early Childhood Coalition to improve early childhood education and childcare in the community
• Named Citizen of the Year by the Pine City Area Chamber of Commerce in 2007

Highlights in the Region

• Chaired the Northern Technology Initiative, a regional consortium to improve economic development and technology business recruitment in East Central Minnesota, from 1999 to 2010; the group was subsequently awarded one of four grants statewide to carry out integrated regional workforce and economic development planning by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

Highlights within the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system

• Chaired the Technology Committee of the system's Leadership Council
• Serves on the Enterprise IT Investment Committee to direct a $60M project to upgrade core IT infrastructure for all state colleges and universities within the system
• Serves on the MnSCU Leadership Committee on Finance, Facilities and Administration
• Chaired statewide committees on business practices, biotechnology, polytechnic education and shared services for MnSCU
