Pinyin (Chinese: 拼音pinyin: pīnyīn) is a system of romanization for the Chinese language, where pin means "spell" and yin means "sound". It can refer to several transcription systems for Chinese:

  • Hanyu Pinyin, what most people mean when referring to pinyin: the official romanization system in the People's Republic of China and official in the Republic of China since 01-01-2009.
  • Tongyong Pinyin, a derivative of Hanyu Pinyin used officially in the Republic of China (Taiwan) between 2002 and 2008.
  • Weituoma Pīnyīn (Wēituǒmǎ Pīnyīn), the Chinese name for the Wade-Giles system of Mandarin language romanization
