Review

The group's debut EP is an uncompromising introduction to Mary Timony's mix of radical feminism and warped pop sensibilities. Songs like "XXX," "OOO," and "Baby Vampire Made Me" are alluring and vicious, made all the more startling by their sonically droning and lyrically violent contrasts. Timony murmurs sentiments like "your love is a fad/and you're a drag" and "you're gonna pay me with your life" in a schoolgirlish alto, adding to the intriguing contradictions in her work. Though it requires some concentrated listening, Pirate Prude ultimately rewards its listeners. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
