Plant anatomy

Sci-Tech Encyclopedia: Plant anatomy

The area of plant science concerned with the internal structure of plants. It deals both with mature structures and with their origin and development.

The plant anatomist dissects the plant and studies it from different planes and at various levels of magnification. At the level of the cell, anatomy overlaps plant cytology, which deals exclusively with the cell and its contents. Sometimes the name plant histology is applied to the area of plant anatomy directed toward the study of cellular details of tissues. See also Plant cell; Plant organs.
