Biography

Known for their hard-edged sound, rock & roll lifestyle of yesteryear, and mission to deliver modern music from itself, New Zealand band Pluto began climbing the indie rock ladder shortly after their formation in 1994. The Auckland-based band took their time in assembling repertoire and building support for their debut recording. Red Light Syndrome was independently released in 2001 before it was picked up and distributed by Antenna Recordings. Selling a disappointing 2,700 copies caused both a stall in momentum and a hit to the band's moral. Pluto started touring nationally shortly after the record's release, performing throughout Australia starting in 2003, and gracing the stage at the famous South by Southwest music festival in 2004. Shortly after returning to New Zealand, Pluto began work on their sophomore effort. Their time on the road offered ample time to write new material and seek new artistic direction. Ramping up for the record's release, bandmembers touted themselves in local press as "a band's band," and the "band that would breathe life back into rock n roll." Their creative juices and full-blown savior complex in high gear, Pluto took to the road in support of Pipeline Under the Ocean, performing throughout New Zealand and Australia. Performing alongside established acts like Golden Horse and Goodshirt brought Pluto's music before the largest audiences they'd seen to date, earning them significant exposure and regional acclaim. Pipeline Under the Ocean found its way onto indie rock charts throughout the English-speaking world. ~ Evan C. Gutierrez, All Music Guide
