Pocahontas

Movies:

Pocahontas

  • Release Year: 1908

Plot

Edison's Pocahontas adheres to the accepted legend, wherein teen-aged Indian princess Pocahontas rescues Jamestown colonist John Smith from execution. The heroine marries another settler named John Rolfe, who whisks her off to England where she spends the rest of her tragically brief life. While leaving the Manhattan theater in New York, a critic for the trade magazine Variety overheard one of the patrons describing Pocahontas as "a bum job." The critic agreed, noting that Pocahontas looked like a "Chinese ballet girl" and that the rest of the Indians resembled Jewish vaudeville comedians. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
