A polarimeter is a laboratory instrument used to determine the angle of optical rotation of plane-polarized light passing through a sample of material.
A typical polarimeter consists of a light source, a polarizer, a sample holder, and some form of viewer. The optical rotation of many materials depends on both wavelength and temperature, so polarimeters often have ways to control these.
