As a result of a bond scandal, was impeached on February 26, 1862, along with Governor Charles L. Robinson and state Auditor George S. Hillyer. Robinson was convicted by the state Senate on June 12, 1862 and removed from office, becoming the first state executive branch official to be impeached and removed from office in U.S. history.
