- ^ Arthur C. Mellette had served as the final governor of Dakota Territory prior to his election as the first governor of the State of South Dakota.

Bushfield was appointed to fill her husband's term on October 6, 1948; she then resigned the seat on December 26, 1948. The seat was vacant for five days until Karl E. Mundt was appointed on December 31, 1948; he had won election to a full term in the seat on November 2, 1948.
