Political Register

Political Register The best-known radical newspaper in the early 19th cent. Launched by William Cobbett in January 1802 as a weekly, supported by William Windham, it pursued a fiercely right-wing anti-French stance. But Cobbett soon moved to a radical position, condemning the Whigs as mere temporizers and calling constantly for reform of Parliament. In 1816 he brought out a cheap edition—the famous ‘Twopenny Trash’—which sold in tens of thousands.
