The Politics of Lombardy Italy takes place in a framework of a semipresidential representative democracy, whereby the President of Regional Administration is the head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the Regional Administration. Legislative power is vested in the Regional Council.

Executive

The Regional Administration (Giunta Regionale) is presided by the President of the Region (Presidente della Regione), who is elected for a five-year term, and is currently composed by 22 members: the President, 17 Aldermen (Assessori), including a Vice President (Vice Presidente), and 4 Under-Secretaries (Delegati del Presidente).[1]

Legislative branch

The Regional Council of Lombardy (Consiglio Regionale della Lombardia) is composed of 80 members, of which 64 are elected in provincial constituencies with proportional representation, 16 from the so-called "regional list" of the elected President. One seat goes for the candidate for President who comes second, who usually becomes the leader of the opposition in the Council. If a coalition wins more than 60% of the vote, only 8 candidates from the "regional list" will be elected and the number of those elected in provincial constituencies will be 71.[2][3][4]

The Council is elected for a five-year term, but, if the President suffers a vote of no confidence, resigns or dies, under the simul stabunt, simul cadent prevision (introduced in 1999 - literally they will stand together or they will fall together), also the Council will be dissolved and snap elections will be called.[3]
