Any disease affecting a number of muscles simultaneously.

• endocrine p. — occurs in association with hyperadrenocorticism in dogs.
• idiopathic p. — a cause of acute pain, muscle weakness and lameness or, in a chronic form, muscle atrophy, in dogs. May be generalized or affecting only certain muscle groups, particularly of the head.
