Under the terms of the Act for the Relief of the Poor 1597, poor relief was help given to the poor. Poor people receiving poor relief were known as paupers. Poor relief could be in several forms:
Under the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 such forms of outdoor relief were discouraged in an attempt to make people accept indoor relief inside a workhouse.
