Review

In 2000, Philippine acoustic rock band Color It Red released their third album, Pop Fiction. Although the music, as before, is acoustic oriented, the album departs markedly from the band's previous efforts. Much of Pop Fiction has a syncopated jazz flavor to it, as heard on "Halika" (Come Here), "All You Got to Do," "Perfect Thing," "Icarus," and "Una't Huli" (Beginning and Ending). Another song, the spirited pop/rock song "Sumigaw Ka" (Shout), contains a jazz-influenced saxophone solo played by guest musician Tots Tolentino. The folkish "Reverie" contains another jazzy saxophone solo by Tolentino. "Upside Down" features Brazilian bossa nova rhythms. The acoustic nature of Pop Fiction imbues a folk ambience as well. The plaintive "Lullaby" features only acoustic guitar and voice, and it is folkish. Color It Red is centered on the fine vocals of female lead singer "Cooky Chua," whose voice is graceful and contains a reservoir of strength in its delicateness.

Pop Fiction needs to be heard several times to allow the music to settle in, as the music is mostly delicate and unobtrusive. It sometimes seems the arrangements are stronger and more memorable than the melodies, but some of that is attributable to the delicate nature of the melodies. However, as with Color It Red's previous two albums, there is a sameness to the album, despite the adventurous arrangements, and stronger melodies would probably help things out. Still, Pop Fiction is a well-produced effort, and displays more courage than most Philippine albums. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
