Review
From German label Crippled Dick Hot Wax!, which provided the world with wonderful CD reissues of VampyrosLesbos: Sexadelic Dance Party, Schulmadchen, and Beat at Cinecittà , comes another beauty. This time the focus is Pop Shopping: Juicy Music From German Commercials 1960-1975. Like most of the records from Crippled Dick Hot Wax!, this is another view of easy listening lounge music from the '60s and '70s, serving as a time capsule on CD. German ad composers played with the popular music of the time that was being heard in the U.S., England, and France to sell products. One can hear how this music would definitely overshadow the visuals being presented. These are charming tunes that were used to catch the attention of the young viewer. Originally, these songs were used on television commercials and issued as flexidiscs with the actual products to grab individuals at their homes. Gert Wilden receives a well-deserved top billing, with his wonderful blend of funk and Muzak. Wilden is a great choice as a composer of commercial advertisements, with his catchy ditties that remain fresh in the mind for hours, embracing the concept of the advertisement to its fullest. The 1974 "Ford Taurus" ad music by Christian Bruhn emulated the concept of the hip ad for the young, sounding like "The Theme From Shaft" in accompaniment to a fast car zipping down the road. Also, the cool jazz sounds of Klaus Wusthoff and others are contributed. The packaging and design of Crippled Dick Hot Wax! are of the highest quality, including informative liner notes by Senor 45 and Sir d'Oervre. This is a thoughtful, hip European take on music you might have heard on Laugh-In or Hullabaloo. ~ Francis Arres, Rovi| Pop-Shopping [EFA] (2000 Album by Various Artists) | |
