die-cut brochure or other form of direct-mail or print advertising designed to rise or "pop up" when opened by a recipient. Pop-up mechanisms are used by graphic designers as attention-getting devices to add a "third dimension" to a certain element of a brochure. When a pop-up folder is opened, its pop-up mechanism is activated by a specially designed die-cut fold that will cause a specific graphic element to rise from the brochure's center. Pop-up folders are far more costly to produce than regular brochures and are generally used only when a special effect is desired.
