Biography

Barcelona rapper Porta found underground fame as a teenager on the Internet, via MySpace and YouTube, before signing a recording contract with Universal and releasing his Top Ten major-label debut, En Boca de Tantos, in 2008. Born in 1988 in Barcelona, Spain, Porta was inspired by hip-hop culture at a young age, influenced by the American rap scene. As a teenager he began performing as a rapper and eventually began compiling his demo recordings, resulting in his first underground release, No Es Cuestión de Edades (2006). Around this same time, he joined the MySpace social network, where he streamed his music and began drawing a following among young Spanish rap listeners. A second underground release, No Hay Truco (2007), spawned further interest in Porta, as did an animated video for "Dragon Ball Rap," which accumulated over five million views. At this point, with a strong fan following for the young rapper already in place, Universal Music Group offered Porta a recording contract. His major-label debut album, En Boca de Tantos (2008), resulted and -- heavily promoted on the Internet, particularly on MySpace and YouTube -- became a Top Ten hit in Spain. The title track of En Boca de Tantos was chosen as the lead single. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

Biography

He began to record rap songs when he was eleven, compiling his demos and releasing his first album, No Es Cuestión de Edades, in 2006.[1] This was followed in 2007 with No Hay Truco. An animated video for "Dragon Ball Rap" attracted over 22 million views on Youtube.[1]

He describes himself as an Internet product[2], as most of his fame has been spread through internet sites such as MySpace and YouTube.[1] His songs are spread through downloads from the internet, and he has beaten many records in internet downloads[3][4].

He was given a recording contract by Universal, who released his major-label debut album, En Boca de Tantos, in 2008, the album reaching the top ten in the Spanish chart.[1]. The album's title track was released as the lead single.[1]

On December 2008 he performed his single En Boca de Tantos in the Spanish competition Disco del Año 2008 because of being most voted on the webpage of the same competition.

Controversy

In Spain, Porta is often insulted and disliked by rap fans and singers.

Reason

This has been discussed in many sites. Rappers are usually divided in two opinions, hate and indifference, with a small portion of them liking Porta's songs. The dislike is most usually attributed to one or many of the following opinions[5][6][7]

  • Porta does not know how to make rhymes
  • Porta does not sing real rap
  • Jealousy towards his fame
  • The fact that Porta grew in a well accommodated family
  • He insults most other rappers
  • Many rappers hate him, so other rappers learn to hate him in order to follow the flow
  • He does not sing classical Spanish rap

Porta himself has made a number of songs advocating this issue. He thinks that it is mostly jealousy and lack of an open mind towards new styles of rap.
