Portland

Place Names: Portland
  • Location: Australia, Canada, UK, USA

1. Australia (Victoria): takes its name from Portland Bay, itself named after William Bentinck (1738–1809), 3rd Duke of Portland, British prime minister (1783, 1807–9). It was also given the French name of Tourville.
2. UK (England): formerly Port, Portlande, and Porland 'Estate by the Harbour' from the Old English port and land.
3. USA (Maine): settled in 1632, it was first called Machigonne and then in fairly quick succession Indigreat, Elbow, The Neck, Casco, and Falmouth after the English port because it was said that their harbours looked similar. Destroyed by the British in 1775, it was rebuilt in 1786 and named after the Isle of Portland in England.
4. USA (Oregon): settled in 1829 and named after the Portland in Maine after two settlers, one from Portland, Maine, and the other from Boston, Massachusetts, tossed a coin to choose the name.
