Legislative elections in Portugal were held on 27 September 2009 to renew all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.[1] The Socialist Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister José Sócrates, won the largest number of seats, but didn't repeat the overall majority they gained in 2005.[2]
According to what the polls predicted, the Socialist Party of Prime Minister José Sócrates came in first, while losing its absolute majority and by undergoing a sharp decline of around 9 points. This regression of the center-left has not greatly benefited the Social Democratic Party of Manuela Ferreira Leite, which hardly improved its score. The surprise of this election was the Popular Party (CDS/PP). Indeed, the nationalist Paulo Portas ranks third, defied expectations and gets one of its best results since 1976. To the left of the left hand no surprise: the Left Block (BE) supplants the Unitarian Democratic Coalition as the first force, and the two formations obtain a result consistent with opinion polls.
Neither of the two major parties won an absolute majority in the Assembly of the Republic, so, the future prime minister must form a coalition, or at least rely on other parties to govern. In this case, José Sócrates is in a better position than Manuela Ferreira Leite, since the Portuguese left won by 54.23% of the vote and 128 seats, 39.54% against and 102 deputies to the right.
With 230 seats the results are:[3]
- Socialist Party (PS): 97
- Social Democratic Party (PSD): 81
- Democratic and Social Centre - People's Party (CDS-PP): 21
- Left Bloc (BE): 16
- Democratic Unity Coalition (PCP-PEV): 15
