(navigation) A point defined by stated or implied coordinates, usually on the surface of the earth.


 
 

1. Banking. (1) bank's net balance of a foreign currency taking into account all assets and liabilities denominated in that currency; (2) mortgage banker's inventory of mortgages held in portfolio, as compared to take-out commitments from investors; and (3) lender's status, either secured by collateral or fully unsecured, in relation to other creditors of a single borrower. 2. Foreign Exchange. A dealer's inventory in a particular currency. When interest rates in a particular country go down, dealers sell that country's currency; when rates rise, they add to their net position.

3. Investments. An investor's stake in a market, in the form of open (unliquidated) contracts. Investors take a view on the market by Going Long (buying) or Going Short (selling) securities. A Long Position also is a dealer's inventory of unsold securities. See also Short Position; Short Sale.
