Review

The Hi Fi Killers make a big leap forward with their second album, Possession. Unlike many '90s funk-rock groups, they don't hammer the beat home, they give it room to breathe, venturing into jazzy hip-hop-flavored territory every once and a while. Nevertheless, the group is devoted to the ideals of '70s funk collectives, where the band and assorted guests kept the groove going as long as it was fun. Similarly, there are cameos from all sorts of Seattle luminaries on the record, yet their vocal and instrumental contributions don't draw attention to themselves -- they blend into the overall sound. Possession is the kind of album where the texture and the groove are more important than the songs -- many of the tracks simply aren't memorable on their own, but while the record is playing, it's an earthy, funky delight. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
