Review

Canada has produced some truly original artists from truly unique areas of the country. Based in Whitehorse, Yukon, the Undertakin' Daddies create a sound of their own. The band is hard to categorize, and that is one of its brilliant aspects. Country, blues, rock, and folk are all mixed together. The Undertakin' Daddies rock and roll through music ranging from country standards (a stunning cover of Roger Miller's "Invitation to the Blues") to their own originals, telling stories of northern Canada and bondsmen. Not a boring moment is to be found. The arrangements are traditional and the production reflects this tradition by being free of all too common studio trickery. The strong melodies of the songs are strengthened by the band's incredible harmonies. The playing is flawless and the combination of the instruments used adds to the uniqueness of the sound. Again, tradition is the key here: standup bass, harmonica, guitar, vocals, and fiddle (played by guest Calvin Volrath), and not a drum or synthesized instrument to be found. Truly inspiring and brilliant, this is an incredibly strong debut album. Country or folk fans will love it. ~ Aaron Badgley, Rovi
