Poker Guide:

Pot Building

When a player bets in an attempt to create a larger pot.

SoundPoker Says: Pot Building most often happens in the pre-flop betting round when a player with a strong hand attempts to create a larger pot.

For example, assume in a hand of limit Texas Hold'em with 8 players, every player limps in. But the big blind holds a strong hand, and uses his option to raise, followed by every player calling the big blind's bet. Therefore, instead of having 8 small bets in the pot, as there would have been had the big blind checked, there are now 16 small bets. The pot is literally larger now, after being "built up" by the big blind's raise.
