(b Belfast, 22 Sept 1918; d Greystones, 5 July 1980). Irish composer. A pupil of Vaughan Williams at the RCM (1936-8), he taught at the Royal Irish Academy of Music from 1955 and was a journalist and broadcaster. His large output includes orchestral and choral works, ballets and folksong arrangements in a broadly Romantic style, his Sinfonia de profundis (1968) for orchestra achieving popularity.
