Flemish family of artists. (1) Pieter Pourbus was renowned for his portraits, but was no less active as a painter of religious and secular compositions. His painted oeuvre consists of 40 signed and/or documented works, to which 30 attributions can be added. He was also an important designer of architectural, applied arts and decorative schemes and an outstanding cartographer (25 maps by him are known). Pieter's reputation as a portraitist has sometimes been eclipsed by the work of his son (2) Frans Pourbus (i) and his grandson (3) Frans Pourbus (ii).
