Review

Power Ballads isn't what it suggests. It's more likely what one-man band David Terry was listening to in high school. "Growing Up with GNR" makes the clearest reference to that, as Terry cribs some lyrics from Guns N' Roses' "Patience": "I've been walking these streets tonight, just trying to get it right." Aside from the nod to those rock heroes, this debut from the singer/guitarist of Epperley is actually a strong entry in lo-fi indie rock, standing proudly alongside the early work of Death Cab for Cutie. The excellent use of piano, drum machines, and Casio keyboards contributes to his heartaching, melodious songwriting. Terry uses a ubiquitous Casio rhythm on "Try It Now!" to great effect, without sounding like an '80s throwback. Later, he creates noise à la Built to Spill for "Revolving Door/Mike Tyson's Punch-Out." Overall, this is a wonderful combination of '80s pop and '90s indie rock. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

Power Ballads is the debut album by Aqueduct. It was recorded by Trent Bell at Bell Labs (Flaming Lips, Starlight Mints) and self-released on February 25, 2003. After releasing the album, frontman David Terry relocated to Seattle, Washington. Twelve hours after Terry's arrival in Seattle, Aqueduct opened for Modest Mouse.[1] Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab For Cutie) subsequently recommended Aqueduct to Barsuk Records, who signed the band and released Pistols at Dawn in 2004.
