Biography

Although Ohio-bred, Chicago-based indie rockers Powerspace are part of the same Fueled by Ramen empire that unleashed Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and The Academy Is..., the young quartet features a subtle change from the emo-tinged punk-pop that made the label's name. Powerspace specialize in a cross between hooky power pop à la Fountains of Wayne, ironic glam metal in the tradition of the Darkness, and heavily '80s-influenced dance-rock textures that recall early MTV stars like INXS and Duran Duran. Powerspace formed at Ohio's Miami University in 2005, when two high-school friends from the suburbs of Chicago, guitarist Tom Schleiter and bassist Daniel McMahon, reunited on campus. Schleiter had been in a local band at Miami University with drummer Kevin Kane, and when the slightly younger McMahon started college a year later, the trio formed its own group. After auditioning a succession of lead singers, McMahon and Schleiter reconnected with another former high-school classmate now at Miami University, Alec Cyganowski, who took over the role of frontman. After working the southern Ohio tour circuit, the quartet recorded a self-released demo EP, Houston, We Have a Party, in 2006. The demo and the band's increasing live reputation created a flurry of label interest, settled when Powerspace signed with Fueled by Ramen. Quitting school and moving back to Chicago, Powerspace recorded their debut album, The Kicks of Passion, in early 2007 for release that summer. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

History

The band first began performing while students at Miami University. Chicago natives and high school friends Tom Schleiter and Daniel McMahon, who both attended St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois, began playing together at the university, and soon formed a trio with fellow Miami student and Green, Ohio drummer Kevin Kane. After a search for a vocalist, another Miami student and friend of Schleiter and McMahon's, Alec Cyganowski, joined the group.[1] The band began touring and developed a reputation for energetic live shows,[1][2] sparking a large amount of interest from record labels.[1] The band then moved back to Chicago and signed to Fueled By Ramen Records, who released their first full-length, The Kicks of Passion, on July 31, 2007. A spot playing at SXSW[3] and nationwide touring ensued in the US in 2007, opening for Hawthorne Heights, Amber Pacific, Monty Are I, Melee, From First to Last, and The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.[2][4] Most recently, the band's single "Powerspace Snap Bracelet" was featured in SPIN,[5] who also reviewed their album,[6] and the band was profiled in Aquarian magazine.[7] The band has toured with The Classic Crime, Envy on the Coast, Kaddisfly, Madina Lake, Mayday Parade, Brighten, and We The Kings in support of the album. Recently, they added an additional guitarist named Max Perenchio, He was filling in while Tom was attending college. Max was invited to stay, and now is part of the band.

Starting on April 16, 2008 and ending on the morning of April 17, several of the guys took part in an all night chat on the forum, absolutepunk.net. Along with fans that stayed all night, they broke the previous record, held by The Audition, for most posts in a news thread, with over 5100 replies over about 8 hours.

On May 20, 2008, Dan made the decision to leave Powerspace. He has been replaced by Jake Serek.

Powerspace is set to release a full length titled "American Machine" in early 2010.

Solo Projects

In 2008, drummer, Kane, held an online contest which many teenage fans participated in to become a member of Kane's new indie band called Subway. Kane came up with the name himself. On several occasions online he has said that it is where he met long-time girlfriend, Lauren Borkowski. Rumors on a proposal to Borkowski have been heard. His girlfriend is also the supposed maraca player, though other members are still unknown. The self-titled record is set to release in Fall 2010.
