Shellfish of various tribes of suborder Macrura. Large fish of species of Palaemonidae, Penaeidae, and Pandalidae are prawns; smaller ones are shrimps. A 100-g portion (250 g with shell) is a rich source of protein, niacin, and selenium; a good source of calcium; contains 1600 mg of sodium; supplies 110 kcal (460 kJ).

The deep-water prawn is Pandalus borealis; common pink shrimp is Pandalus montagui; brown shrimp is Crangon spp. See also Dublin bay prawn; lobster; scampi.
