Philosophy Dictionary: preexistence
Top

Existence of the individual soul prior to its current embodiment. The doctrine that this actually occurs is found in Plato, and is a tenet of Hindu philosophy. Contemporary philosophers are more likely to diagnose it as dependent on an untenable conception of the self.
