Premier Inn is the UK's largest hotel brand, with over 40,000 rooms and more than 590 hotels. Originally opened under the "Travel Inn" brand name in 1987, it has been owned by Whitbread during its entire operation and was set up to compete with the Travelodge brand which was at the time owned by Forte.

History
The chain started trading in 1987 as 'Travel Inn'. In 2004, Whitbread acquired Premier Lodge for £505 million.[1] This added an additional 141 hotels to the existing portfoloio and Whitbread re-branded all hotels as "Premier Travel Inn", which was soon shortened to "Premier Inn".
Locations
Hotels are found in either city centres or on the outskirts on major A-roads. Unlike its competitor Travelodge, they are rarely found in motorway service areas, concentrating on locations where they are allowed to serve alcohol. Ownership by Whitbread, historically a brewery, but now a pub and hotel chain, ensures that all Premier Inns, with the exception of motorside locations, have a pub/restaurant on-site serving alcohol.
The chain has expanded overseas to open a hotel in Dubai with intentions to expand in India[2] and the Persian Gulf.
Facilities
All Premier Inns have a restaurant and bar either within the hotel or on the same site. Where the restaurant is in a separate building, it is usually one of Whitbread's own branded restaurants (Beefeater, Brewers Fayre, Table Table or Taybarns). In some former Premier Lodge locations, third-party pub restaurants run by Punch Taverns, such as Chef & Brewer, are located next to the hotel. In some former Holiday Inn Express locations, the hotel is situated on site with a Mitchells & Butlers run pub restaurant (such as Harvester). In all cases the pub restaurant serves the breakfasts for the hotel.
