Review

From music through books and merchandise, including a limited line in underwear together with Agent Provocateur, Munich's Helmut Josef Geier's great gigolo swindle continued through 2001, with the label manager swiping both best DJ and A&R awards German Dance Awards that year. His fifth compilation again trounced all-comers with a fearless selection that blended techno, trance, house, and the much-vaunted electroclash over two unmixed CDs. The pick of the previous year's output is included, with Tuxedomoon, Mitsu, and the Advent all making an appearance, though it is the previewing of forthcoming albums from Kitten and Japanese Telecom and the first landfall from new signings Traxx and Deecoy, Romina Cohn, and Tiga which will have Gigolo gigolos hot under the collar. The much-vaunted electroclash of Casey Spooner and Warren Fischer's eponymous project steal the show, however; the irrepressible bass bounce of "Emerge" ultimately proves to be the sound of the summer. ~ Kingsley Marshall, Rovi
