Nestled at the foot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge is a National Historic Landmark District called the Presidio. Formerly one of the oldest continuously operating military posts in the US, the Presidio was transferred to the National Park Service in 1994 following the base's closure. Two years later, US Congress established the Presidio Trust to manage the district in partnership with the National Park Service. The Presidio Trust was created to help transform the historic post into a park, to preserve and enhance its resources, and to support it with revenue from leasing its buildings. The Trust manages the interior 80% of lands; the National Park Service manages the district's coastal areas.
