Process of sorting mail by destination and type of handling prior to mailing in order to comply with U.S. Postal Service and Canada Post regulations for bulk mail preparation and, in most cases, to qualify for postage discounts. The USPS and Canada Post offer postage presort discounts to compensate mailers for doing some of the sorting work the postal service would otherwise have to do.

Discounts vary by the class of mail, by the level of sort, and by the method of grouping: package, sack, or pallet. For example, mail sorted to the carrier route level will earn a higher discount than mail sorted to the five-digit zip code level.

Each presorted package, sack, or pallet must meet minimum volume requirements in order to qualify for the discount; therefore, the larger the mailing or the more concentrated its distribution, the greater the potential for presort discounts. For example, 50 pieces going to each of the 50 states will not be eligible for discounts, but 50 pieces going to the same carrier route are eligible for a carrier-route discount in addition to a five-digit ZIP code discount. Fifty million pieces distributed nationwide are likely to meet enough minimum volume requirements to earn a substantial discount.

Details on the USPS and Canada Post presort requirements for presorted mail are in the domestic mail manual and the pass manual.
