(prĕ-stē'jəs, -stĭj'əs) pronunciation
adj.
Having prestige; esteemed.

prestigiously pres·ti'gious·ly adv.
prestigiousness pres·ti'gious·ness n.

This older meaning 'deceptive, illusory', relating to the older sense of prestige, has given way to its current meaning 'having a great reputation or influence' to the extent that the earlier use has been largely forgotten. One of the earliest uses of the newer meaning occurs in a novel by Joseph Conrad:
'You have had all these immense sums...What have I had out of them?' It was perfectly true. He had had nothing out of them—nothing of the prestigious or the desirable things of the earth—Chance, 1913.

Previous:prestige, presently, present tense
Next:presumptuous, pretence, pretty
