Approved by the FDA in December 2004, Prialt is the first of a new class of drugs that block nerve channels responsible for transmitting pain. The new class is known as N-type calcium channel blockers. Prialt, which is known chemically as ziconotide, is seen as an alternative to the morphine. It has been approved for use by patients with diseases such as cancer and AIDs who are taking morphine by microinfusion pump but who are not getting relief, as well as for patients who cannot tolerate existing pain therapies. Side effects of the drug include dizziness, drowsiness and altered mental states, and the FDA is including a "black box" warning - the government's strongest warning - on the new drug. Prialt was approved despite its side effects because there are no alternatives available for the patients who need it.
