Primary Reserves

Banking Dictionary: Primary Reserves

Cash needed to operate a bank, plus the Legal Reserves required to be held in a Federal Reserve Bank or correspondent bank, plus uncollected checks. Primary reserves can be used to cover sudden deposit outflows that might occur in a depositor Run or a temporary liquidity crisis. Primary reserves are distinguished from Secondary Reserves which may be invested in marketable securities, such as Treasury bills and municipal bonds.
