Primus Canada is a Canadian telecommunications company. Primus operates as a CLEC — buying services at wholesale rates and reselling them to consumers. The company offers long distance, wireless, VoIP, DSL Internet, and POTS to both the residential and business markets.

Primus was founded in 1997 as a wholly owned subsidiary of McLean, Virginia-based Primus Telecommunications Group, Incorporated. With over 700 employees, Primus has offices in many Canadian cities including Ottawa, Vancouver, Oakville, London, Windsor, Montreal, Toronto, Edmundston and Edmonton.

Acquisition of Magma Communications

In early 2004, Primus Canada acquired Ottawa-based Magma Communications Ltd.,[1] an ISP with customers based mostly in the Ottawa and Toronto metropolitan areas.[citation needed] In 2006, Primus Canada merged Magma's customer databases, services and call centres into its own organization, gradually phasing out the Magma brand.[citation needed]

Bankruptcy of parent company

Primus Canada's parent company, Primus Telecommunications Group, Incorporated, filed for bankruptcy on March 16, 2009. It emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy on July 1, 2009, with the shareholders of the original company suffering a near total loss of their investment. The company now trades under ticker symbol PTGi.
