Prince Nikolai of Denmark, Count of Monpezat (Danish: Prins Nikolai William Alexander Frederik til Danmark, greve af Monpezat; born 28 August 1999) is a member of the Danish Royal Family. He is the elder son of Prince Joachim and his former wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. He has a younger brother, Prince Felix, and a younger half-brother, Prince Henrik.

Prince Nikolai was born at the Rigshospitalet (Copenhagen University Hospital). H Prince Nikolai is the oldest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and her husband, Prince Henrik.

After their divorce, Prince Joachim and Alexandra have joint custody of Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix. Nikolai attends Krebs School in Copenhagen, following in the footsteps of his father and uncle.

As of November 2009, Prince Nikolai is fifth in the line of succession to the Danish throne. Next to that, he is also in the line of succession to the British throne.

Name and christening

Prince Nikolai was christened in chapel of Fredensborg Palace on 6 November 1999. His godparents are his paternal uncle, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark; The Earl of Wessex, Peter Steentrup, his maternal aunt, Nicola Baird; and Camilla Flint.

  • Nikolai: is after is maternal aunt and one of his godmothers, Nicola Baird.
  • William: is after his maternal great-grandfather, William Manley.
  • Alexander: is after his mother, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.
  • Frederik: is a common name for Danish Kings, and is also the name of his uncle and one of his godfathers, Crown Prince Frederik.
